With the growing popularity of do-it-yourself spray foam kits, we've received many questions over the past few months regarding techniques and coverage for various spray foam applications. Here's a question regarding insulating a crawl space:"I don't know much about spray foams, but this Touch ‘n Seal® Low Density Spray Foam looks like something that might work for me. I want to insulate the floor in a crawl space in a 100 yr old house. The crawl space has a limited number of vents and ranges in height from about 4 ft down to 2 ft. It is around 1500 sf. How easy would it be to spray with that limited amount of space and is it a problem spraying it up rather than horizontally? What kind of safety equipment would I need to wear (some kind of breathing apparatus or a simple mask with a filter). When it is applied as directed how much depth is there? Can it be sprayed thinner for more coverage? What would you recommend here?"
Keep in mind, spray foam kits are a great way to touchup areas or for small projects requiring limited coverage. Larger projects should involve a licensed spray foam applicator.
In response to this question, you absolutely need proper safety gear: hazmat suit, mask with breathing respirator (especially since working in a confined space). We wouldn't recommend you spraying thinner for more coverage as you will sacrifice insulation benefits (R-value). Each spray foam kit has instructions for use - which should be followed for best results.

Low pressure polyurethane spray foam insulation kits are perfect for air sealing and insulating. These 2-component quick set foam kits
are available in several different sizes to meet your foaming needs.
Kits ship with foam, hoses, spray gun and extra tips -- everything
needed to get started foaming.Other than smaller home type air sealing and weatherization projects, spray foam applications should only be performed by trained professionals that understand the chemicals involved, proper application techniques, and most importantly, the correct safety practices and personal protective equipment (PPE) that is required. There can be many hazards involved with the application of polyurethane foam if not done properly.
Spray Foam is also available in small single component cans for the homeowner and contractor to insulate and seal cracks, gaps, windows, outlets, floors, doors and more.
Sealing between the floors and bottom plating will help to prevent air and moisture infiltration and exfiltration through the cracks in the building structure. Most every spray foam insulation contractor uses this type of equipment in one form or another to supplement their application service and collection of tools and equipment.
Home owners and facility managers can also use these products to seal cracks and insulate their buildings and homes.

Do-it-yourself spray foam kits are quickly becoming
the insulation of choice for homeowners. Spray foam insulation is
easier to install, quicker, safer, and have twice the R-value per inch of fiberglass insulation.
Spray foam insulation starts as two liquid components (A and B, if you will) that are heated and then passed through two hoses and meet at the tip of a gun where the chemical reaction begins. It creates a thin film that expands to 100 times its volume in eight seconds, and then it’s permanently set.
When properly installed, this particular foam insulation will not allow air to move through or around it, creating a complete air barrier. Thinly applied in the wall cavity or “picture-framed” around the studs, Home Sealing Foam Kits eliminate air infiltration, offering the best building envelope solution.
Now that the majority of states have adopted the Energy Efficiency Resource Standards (EERS), greater emphasis will be placed on making homes more efficient to consume less energy. This is a win-win situation as it creates lower energy costs. Spray foam insulation will also increase the resale value of your home. 2008 Research shows that 80% of Americans are willing to pay more for a “green home”. It also creates a more comfortable environment by minimizing the growth of mold, mildew, insects and rodents which can lead to allergies.
Do-it-yourself professionals can put their expertise to work with DIY kits that are designed to deliver all the benefits of spray foam insulation. Touch ‘n Seal Home Sealing Foam Kits are a very popular example of these. Even experienced DIY professionals must ensure that they understand the specific techniques necessary to install spray foam insulation. Protective gear is essential to use when spraying, particularly in confined spaces.
Spray Foam Nation specializes in training and certifying contractors on the proper techniques of spray foam insulation. If you have any questions about spray foam usage or would like more information on upcoming spray foam training sessions, please contact us.

There are many considerations when choosing insulation for the home. In addition to potential cost savings, homeowners must consider the space to be insulated, installation methods, cost of the installation, and predicted durability of
the insulation. When comparing types of insulation, many homeowners
make a spreadsheet so they can keep track of everything. It is possible
to go green by simply adding another column to the spreadsheet so you
can keep track of how a particular type of insulation meets your
environmental goals.
Even if environmentally-friendly products and applications are your primary goal, it is important to remember that you have to choose what is best for your home. If a particular type of insulation is completely green in every way but its use is limited in a way that makes it somehow unsuitable for your space, you should not choose it. Even though you may be attracted to the green qualities of it, you will ultimately cancel your environmental efforts out because you will have to redo it or use so much of it that the benefits will be diminished to nothing.
The Green Home Guide offers some insight into how insulating properly the first time can be a green action in itself:
Over the lifespan of a home, the energy saved with a well-insulated building envelope far outweighs the environmental impact of insulation’s manufacture. The North American Insulation Manufacturers Association states that the insulation produced annually in the United States saves 12 times the energy its manufacture consumes.
All types of insulation have advantages and disadvantages. According to the Green Home Guide, foam insulation’s attributes can negate its environmental impact enough to make it a green choice:
Foam insulation offers some significant benefits that can offset … drawbacks, including higher R-values for a given thickness and improved air sealing of surfaces. Over the lifespan of a home, foams will save more energy per inch of insulation because of these R-values and their durability.
Customers may wonder exactly what R-values are and why they matter in this discussion. The United States Department of Energy has a website, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at www.energysavers.gov, which provides useful information about renewable energy sources, conserving energy, tax credits, and more. This site explains that R-value “indicates an insulation’s resistance to heat flow,” and notes, “The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness.”
Given this explanation, it is easy to see why R-value is an important factor when considering insulation. It provides a key context for homeowners and others when they are comparing types of insulation. Foam insulation can be a very green way to increase the R-value, as noted in the quote from the Green Home Guide, while improving the home’s insulation quality, reducing heating and cooling costs, and eliminating the need to redo the insulation project with the goal of achieving better results.
Clearly, it is possible to insulate a home in a manner that is friendly to the environment. If your insulation plan includes going green as a primary or secondary goal, spray foam insulation may be an excellent choice for you.

Many people think of their homes as being fairly energy efficient.
They may view drafts or chilly rooms as normal and unavoidable given
the age of the house or another factor. Such conditions, though, should
be addressed because they are not normal and they are completely
avoidable. Any opening, no matter how small, can allow air to enter and
leave a home. This means that a tiny crack could be responsible for
that draft and a larger gap could be the reason that an entire room is
always chilly.
If a home has several cracks and gaps, as many older homes do, it may be much less energy efficient than it seems. In the winter, these openings allow warm air to leave the home and cold air to enter it. Conversely, in the summer, the cracks and gaps allow cooler air to leave the home and warmer air to enter it. This has a direct impact on the customer’s wallet because the customer is paying for air that is leaving the home.
Spray foam insulation can dramatically increase a home’s energy efficiency. It can be used in tiny openings as well as large spaces throughout the home; it can also be used in other types of buildings, and it does not require maintenance after it is installed.
Do-it-yourself professionals can put their expertise to work with DIY kits that are designed to deliver all the benefits of spray foam insulation. Touch ‘n Seal Home Sealing Foam Kits are a very popular example of these. This type of insulation is different from fiberglass insulation and different skills are required to install it. Even experienced DIY professionals must ensure that they understand the specific techniques for installation of spray foam insulation before using the product. After finishing the project, they will use specialized cleaning products to clean the equipment.
Safety is important for everyone who will be installing spray foam insulation. In addition to making sure they are using the appropriate techniques for installing spray foam insulation, DIY professionals must ensure that they use the proper safety gear. As with any type of project, it is important to make safety a top priority.
DIY kits are available for a range of projects. Some do-it-yourselfers may be focused on filling a few cracks and holes before cold weather arrives while others may be tackling large jobs such as insulating a roof, addition, or even an entire home. With the range of options available, DIY professionals can find exactly what they need to meet the needs of their particular projects.
If you are not sure whether your home has cracks and gaps that are allowing outside air to enter the home, you can do a simple test to find out. It involves lighting a candle and walking around the home with it, watching the flame to see if it flickers – or even goes out – at any point. If it does, you most likely have found a spot where air is entering the home. At the very least, you can check the spot to see if a storm window is loose or a window is open a little bit. If there is no obvious reason for the candle to flicker or go out, you may want to consider an energy audit and begin thinking about a DIY spray foam insulation kit. In addition to saving money on energy bills, you will experience greater comfort at home with fewer drafts.
